Afghan Hound

Thank you to the committee for this invite to judge & to my 2 very efficient stewards. Also thank you to all who entered their hounds under me today, I was thrilled with the entry and have to say was impressed with the quality especially so the depth of quality was in the bitches. In some classes I was spoilt for choice & had to make some difficult decisions. In some classes I could have even given 1st to some that were unplaced today. That is a very pleasing & positive position for the breed and I have to admit not what I would have thought.

Temperaments are much improved & presentation on the majority was excellent. I think we need to consider size as a number of otherwise nice bitches are just simply way over the standard. Despite the standard being changed in recent times we still have people trimming & stripping out coat, I do not like to see it and it does not look good.

I did not see anything that would concern me with regard to health problems in the breed and found the majority of dogs to be very sound & in good condition. One or two would benefit from more exercise to build up muscle tone. You can have coat & muscle as was proven in many winners today. I do so wish we had more of that look through you expression which is sadly not as often seen the days and breed characteristics like mandarin beards & chiselling on the face.

Puppy D (1) : 1 & B.P.D. McCormack’s Tulak Despicable Me, masculine self/m gold with a profuse coat, good head & expression, strong in neck & has a good front, lovely big feet, in good body for age, when settled moved out with ease, ringed tail which is well set, good rear angulation.

Yearling D (5-2abs) : 1 Nisbet & Forrester’s Saxonmill Rebel Rebel at Finix JW, bl/silv masculine in head with good eye & well set neck, excellent top line on stack & when moving, good shoulder & upper arm, plenty of bone & lovely big feet, deep chest & good rib & strong short loin, prominent hip bones, good strong rear & well set ringed tail which is carried correctly on the move, very impressive youngster who for me today is just at that in-between teenager stage with regards to his coat & saddle ; 2 Boydell’s Nightwind You Cant Stop The Beat, this all black male is finer in head than 1 but still has a well balanced skull & fore face, good eye shape & expression, scores in top line & deep in rib, starting to body up & has a correct silky coat & in good condition, moving well but can be a real handful for his owner, enjoying his day out which is important at this young age ; 3 Care’s Nightwind You Are The One.

Temperaments are much improved & presentation on the majority was excellent. I think we need to consider size as a number of otherwise nice bitches are just simply way over the standard. One or two would benefit from more exercise to build up muscle tone. You can have coat & muscle as was proven in many winners today.

Mark Ord (Judge) of quality was in the bitches.
