Ladies Kennel Association December 2018

Borzoi

We had a wonderful big carpeted ring, allowing the hounds to really stride out and settle to their work. The breed is very varied at present, with a large number of imports and hounds from imported stock, and consequent lack of consistency in type. Although I was very happy with my winners, and there were several in both sexes for whom I would happily have signed a CC, there are a number of movement and conformation issues that need watching. Straight upper arm, lack of fill in front, slab-sided ribcages giving a very narrow outlook. Hindquarters were generally much better but the number of hounds with poor feet and/or loose pasterns (or worse, upright or even knuckling over) was worrying and this is something that needs to be tackled urgently.

Movement out and back was mixed. Some narrow (or excessively wide) behind, many loose, untidy or tied-in in front; profile movement was generally good but a few were lifting too much. On the plus side, very few flying tails.

Presentation was very good, it was a pleasure to go over universally clean and well-prepared Borzoi; but a few had dirty teeth and quite a few more, long nails.

Class 2491 MPD (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 8991 WHITE Mrs S & Mr G Mischran Luther, 8 months at his first show and he was remarkably poised and settled. Nice masculine head, plenty of bone and substance, good front assembly and feet, correct topline, lots of scope for future development and he moved very well for such a baby. BPD and BPIB.

2nd: 8948 CLARKE Miss K E Donskoi Daniil, w/s at the rangy stage with pleasing head, good feet, well grown, would prefer more return of upper arm. Good topline, fallaway and tail carriage. Not as forward as the winner, still somewhat loose out and back, and needs more ring training.

3rd: 8964 JACKSON, Mr R & SHAW Miss A Charnealis Old Black Magic at Patztar

Class 2492 PD (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 8971 LEE-BROWN Mrs A C Zar Elbur Kalinow Of Palamedees (Imp), self red with a very shapely outline,  elegant and refined, curves in all the right places, lovely head with good veining. Needs to fill in front but was OK out and back and had decent feet; still raw but the basics are there and he should grow on well.

2nd: 8974 LYDEN Mrs D Donskoi Tchaikousky, quite different type, strong masculine head, stands over plenty of ground with good topline and well angled rear. Feet OK but still rather loose in pastern, good shoulder and upper arm but rather narrow in chest and he was untidy going away.

Class 2493 JD (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 8956 FREDISDOTTIR, Ms M A & FLOYD Mr G Tyysgol Syr G'Wain, attractive self gold male, typy head with good veining; eye a touch light. Very good front assembly, pasterns and feet, stands over plenty of ground with gentle arch and fallaway leading to powerful quarters. Plenty of drive going away and clean low stride on profile, just toeing in slightly in front. Very promising youngster.

Class 2494 PGD (8 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 8947 CLARE Ms J Ryazan Firestorm, g/w male with an impressive eye-filling outline. Really good front assembly with clean shoulder, ample forechest and return of upper arm, well-ribbed up, broad strong loin, gentle arch of topline leading to well balanced fallaway, strong drive behind and covering lots of ground in profile, toeing in a touch in front. Good honest masculine head; overall a lovely young hound. RCC.

2nd: 8958 GRAHAM Mrs S Dashava Calgary, handsome shaded red, very nice head and expression, clean well-angled front, good feet and pasterns, well balanced outline, good length and strength of loin,  slightly sprung ribcage, another promising young hound. Close up.

3rd: 8939 ABRAHAMS Mrs A Jamarqui Morrissey (ai)

Class 2495 LD (8 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 8954 FORAN Mr D J Skyrose Spirit Of Warrior, 2 years self brindle, well short of full maturity; typy head with good strong jaw and teeth, good front assembly with correct feet and pasterns, balanced outline and stood over ample ground, pleasing arch to topline and well-angled rear with correct feet, clean out and back. Eye a touch full.

2nd: 8980 PINKERTON Mrs S M Coverdale's Volcanus At Menigma (Imp), different type, a substantial masculine hound, in full coat, moderate all through, no exaggerations, an honest, well made boy.  Good behind and in profile, carrying a little too much condition which just tended to flatten out his topline on the move.

3rd: 8950 DONNELLY Ms M Donskoi Ivanoff.

Class 2496 OD (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 8982 PINKERTON, Mrs S & CATTONI-SARMAN Ms L Ch Korsakov Radost Power Of Love Menigma (Imp), I gave this lovely w/c a Group at an open show a year or so ago and I was most impressed with him then, when he was clearly not the finished article; and the extra year on his back has only served to strengthen my opinion of him. Such lovely light effortless profile movement driven by powerful clean hindquarters, head refined and typy but still masculine, superb front and feet, maturity has strengthened his back and loin, which are of good length, giving a pleasing gentle arch. In adult coat now and looked a picture, put down to perfection. I understand this win cemented his position of top Borzoi for 2018, an outstanding young hound and it was a pleasure to go over him. CC & BOB, pleased to see him shortlisted in a very strong Group.

2nd: 8981 PINKERTON Mrs S M Ch Ujay Kalinow At Menigma Ger (Imp) JW Sh.CM, another one I have judged and liked as a youngster, now with his well-deserved crown. Balanced all through, masculine head with strong jaw, balanced angulation and excellent feet and pasterns, plenty of depth and well ribbed-up, again outstanding presentation, moving very well all round though not quite able to match the effortless free stride of his kennelmate.

3rd: 8968 KANOO Ms H Nibrass Roger Fitzempress JW

Class 2497 VD (1 Entries) Abs: 1

Class 2498 GCD NO ENTRIES

Class 2499 MPB (4 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 8989 WEBB, Mr C & BATES Miss R Mischran Hinterland, r/w 7 months old, sound with decent front assembly, good forechest for age, stands over enough ground, strong rear, feminine head with good eye shape and well-set ears. Quite good out and back, lifting a touch in front. BPB.

2nd: 8973 LEE-BROWN Mrs A C Undimoon Drotten Palamedees (Swed Imp), very raw self red baby, very nice head, pleasing shoulder and upper arm, ample length of body.  Narrow and loose in front still, and feet could be tighter.

3rd: 8972 LEE-BROWN Mrs A C Undimoon Sankta Katarina Palamedees (Swed Imp)

Class 2500 PB (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 8976 LYDEN Mrs D Donskoi Talsiya, mostly white bitch, quality head, pleasing well-balanced outline, stands over ample ground, strong rear. Well grown but rather narrow in front still and her front movement was a little untidy but a nice type.

2nd: 8985 SEVCENKO Mrs N Cars Ivans Prekrasnaya Vasilisa (Imp) NAF, a real petite baby this one, barely six months and looks it, but she is very nice. Good front with correct angles and well filled, she has huge knobbles and lots of growing to do but everything is on the right lines at present, very well schooled and moved accordingly.

3rd: 8973 LEE-BROWN Mrs A C Undimoon Drotten Palamedees (Swed Imp)

Class 2501 JB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 8943 BARRETT-WILLIAMS Mrs J Tyysgol Guinevere, w/g,  what a lovely youngster, beautiful head with fine detail, best of fronts with enough width across the chest and ample depth for age; a touch soft in pastern. Clean at the wither and well-ribbed up with long, powerful gently arched loin, good fallaway, strong rear with low hocks which she uses to good effect, superb muscle tone which shows in her excellent movement.  Her overall scope and quality earned her the RCC.

Class 2502 PGB (7 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 8963 HUMPHREYS Mrs N V Ryazan Fleur, w/g, a sound, well made and typy youngster, feminine head with strong jaw, pleasing ears, balanced angulation, enough width and depth for her age, standing over plenty of ground and she moved well all round, with a long low stride; nicely presented, correct feet and attention to her nails will help keep them that way. Not yet the finished article and I will watch her progress with interest.

2nd: 8983 RENS Mr G Ryazan Firebird, w/r, litter sister to 1 and many of the same comments apply,  loved her little highset ears on a quality head, again a very good front, with rear angles to match, not quite as mature in body or coat and moved very well without the side extension of 1, a very nice pair who stood away in this class and will no doubt be duking it out in the ring over the next few years.

3rd: 8966 JIDERLUND Miss A K Nega Naryadnaya

Class 2503 LB (3 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 8951 DONNELLY, Ms M & DEVEREUX Mrs J Serenefol Alicja w/br, nice head with typical profile, very good neck, a little soft in pastern; balanced angulation but a little too moderate for my taste. Good length and depth of body, moved pretty well all round though tending to flatten her topline.

Class 2504 OB (8 Entries) Abs: 5

1st: 8944 BARRETT-WILLIAMS Mrs J Ch Iorek's Brienne Of Tarth Over Tyysgol (Imp), a top class mature self cream bitch, typical head with plenty of work, sound well-balanced angles with everything in proportion, firm loin with excellent fallaway, lovely free profile action, sound as a bell. Dam of the RCC winner and one to be proud of both as a show dog and as a brood.

2nd: 8955 FORAN, Mr D & MULLANE Mrs C Donskoi Alexandra, r/w, mature bitch with a pretty head, though would like more fill under the eyes. Adequate front angulation but would prefer more fill and depth between the elbows. Good body length, decent rear, thick plush coat, moved well behind.

3rd: 8969 KANOO Ms H Nibrass Eleanore Reginae

Class 2505 VB NO ENTRIES

Class 2506 GCB (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 8952 EARDLEY Mr R M & Mrs A M Ryazan Perdita of Hillohawks Sh.CM, I last went over this lovely r/w girl when she was about 8 months old and obviously classy but very raw, and I said then that she would be worth the wait; 6 years later that prediction has come true. The word that springs to mind for her is ‘correct’. There is nothing flashy or exaggerated about her, and she is very difficult to fault; everything flows and fits together in a harmonious way, from her classic, feminine head to her well-carried tail, all gentle curves and eye-filling balance. Moves true with clean footfall, light and graceful in profile. CC, her second, and put up a spirited fight in the challenge. A lesson to judges to take this class seriously!

2nd: 8984 ROGERSON Ms S Nibrass Emerald Queen, br/w, very nice quality head and good pigment, overall pleasing outline with good depth and well ribbed up, good topline and fallaway, strong rear. Loose in front with flat feet and weak pasterns.
