City Of Birmingham Canine Association 2018

My thanks to the City of Birmingham for the opportunity to judge my breed at this level. It was lovely to go over dogs I’ve not seen before or for some time. Toplines have improved; there are less of the downward sloping ones that had appeared in the breed. Heads, bar one, were typical just be aware that more is not always better, the depth of the flews in particular. Rear angulation is good but shoulders are still lacking in many, you cannot get the famous Bracco reach without a good length of and sufficient angulation of the upper arm. A gundog needs good feet, still too many poor feet in the breed. There were some super examples of the breed present and some difficult decisions made. I was thrilled that my BOB went on to win Best Junior in Show, congratulations to her owners; she is a cracking young bitch! My thanks to the exhibitors and my steward for giving me a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Veteran Dog (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: BELL Miss A. - Millpoint Double Trouble At Owlspoint Sh.CM  Have watched this lad since he was a puppy. He is powerfully built with a super front - prominent sternum, a good balance and angulation of upper arm and scapula. He fits the square showing minimal tuck-up and nice topline. Sufficient oval bone.  Head showing correct planes. Large nose slightly forward of thin lips. Good dark eye of correct shape. Moved steadily but true as an elder statesman should. BV

Class PD (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: BOWLEY Mrs L Lexus Z Pogonskiego Wzgorza By Gunsyn

9 months, lovely feet and strong straight oval bone. Has good depth and width for his age. Lovely topline into correct croup and tail carriage. Well-made rear which provided plenty of drive. Good underline with skirt evident. Long lean head showing divergent planes, lower and supra orbital ridges. Lovely expressive eye of good shape. Movement was a little loose as you would expect but showed a good reaching stride. BP

1st: JACKSON Mrs N - Gunsyn Tusk

A lot to like about this young man. lovely masculine head, long and lean, correct planes.  Super expressive eye. Ears set correctly.  Strong conical neck of correct length. Good width between shoulder blades. Correct topline showing rise to croup. Tail set and carriage good. Well angulated fore and aft. Super thick and elastic skin.  Moved out sound and true. Needs to tighten in his front feet but is young enough to correct this with the right exercise RBD & RCC

2nd: COTTERELL Mr & Mrs W & P - Valcor Hijo Del Abderraman

Lots of substance with good width of chest and fitted the square. Correct in topline and underline strong in loin and well-made rear.  He has good oval bone and super feet. Masculine head showing divergent planes, large spongy nose protruding over well shaped flews, lovely dark eye, ears of good length and set. Moved well. Another strong masculine boy from this partnership. Nice arch to his neck which was moderate in length of the desired conical shape. Correct head planes .

Class  LD (4 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: GOODE Mr & Mrs M - Owlspoint King Of Trouble At Brackenvale JW Sh.CM

First and second place are litter brothers and so very similar I was splitting hairs. This lad reminded me of his father in his head which was long and lean, narrow through the cheeks. Medial furrow to the midline. Eyes of good shape and colour. Big nose protruding over thin lips. His V’s visible all giving him that classic noble look. Lovely and square in his structure with good width and depth. Lovely angulation, underline and topline. He moved well; with drive true coming and going.

2nd: SANDERSON Mr M R & Mrs C R -  Owlspoint Trouble At Mill Sh.CM

Just came down to some minor points when deciding this placing, today my first looked more correct in his rear angulation. In super well-muscled condition moved with plenty of extension on good tight feet, handled beautifully.

1st BELL, Miss A & MADDOX Miss N Owlspoint Master Of Trouble Sh.CM BD & DCC

At 3 years old he is coming into maturity. Bang on square, his elbow under his withers and point of buttock to ground was just in front of his toes. Topline and underline correct. Good width through his chest and sherry barrel ribs, strong in loin. Balanced masculine head, definition to orbital ridges present. Kind eye of good shape and colour. Sufficient flews and moderate divided dewlap. He covered the ground easily and was very true both coming and going. BD and DCC

2nd: DODDS, Ms C A & PEARSON Mr S A VDH & Ir Ch Braccorions Juno What

Not the finished dog as yet, hopefully his topline will come as he bodies up. Moved well with super side gait. Lovely rear and shoulder construction, strong oval bone and good feet. Nicely balanced head, not exaggerated but has the breed points. Ears well set and of good shape and length. RBD & RCC

Lovely to see this lady and hard to believe she’s a veteran now. Still moves like a youngster with reach and drive. Feminine head, long and lean, narrow through the zigomatic arch. Eyes correctly set with good shape and colour. Nicely shaped muzzle with lovely sweep to her flews. Prominent sternum, good depth and underline. Strong neck. A well-made, nicely angulated, square bitch.

1st: DODDS, Ms C A & PEARSON Mr S A Vissia Del Tavuliddaro

Very much a raw baby but so much to like about her. Lovely thick elastic skin, plenty of skirt. Nice depth and good underline. A bit bum high at the moment but this should balance out as she grows.  Croup line good and tail well set on carried correctly. Movement loose and puppyish but plenty of scope in her stride. Sweet head showing a correct balance and good profile. Occiput evident. Ears nicely set and of good length. Has plenty of breed type, I look forward to watching her grow.

2nd: TOWNS, Miss E & LAY Mr G Betania De Arte Venandi

Super tight feet on this pup, straight oval bone.  Lovely topline, croup and tail carriage held on the move which had plenty of drive and scope.  Feminine head, equal muzzle to skull length and narrow through skull, slight stop. Ear set correct and of good length.  Neck of moderate length well set on.

1st: FROST Mesdames A & J Dora Of Bushwacker Imp It. BJ

Loved this young bitch. No exaggeration just everything in the right place and to standard. Looking at her outline she is square, topline has the required break and rise to the croup. Underline shows minimal tuck-up. Balanced and sufficient angulation fore and aft, rear edge of thigh almost straight. Good width of chest with prominent sternum. Good feet, slightly sloping pastern, straight oval bone. Head feminine, long and lean. Sufficient divergence. Large nose slightly forward of lips. Moved out freely with reach and drive. Delighted to see how well she continued to do on the day. Congratulations! BB BCC BOB & BJIS

2nd NAGY-KOVENCZ Mrs O Polcevera's Cora

A lot to like about this young lady too. Good bone and tight feet. Really nice angulation fore and aft with the good length of upper arm which is so often missing. Correct in topline and underline, croup at 30 deg. and tail well set on carried correctly. Typey and feminine yet strong head, semi-lateral eye set, good shape and colour. Correct planes and lean through the cheeks her ‘V’s evident. Not as free and powerful on the move as my first place but her undercarriage suggests a phantom may be to blame.

Only just 18 months this bitch has a super very typey head with lovely big spongy nose. Correct planes, lower and supra orbital ridges marked. Nice eye of good shape. Lovely topline and underline, super width through her rib cage – plenty of heart and lung room. Powerful rear assembly which was used to good effect when on the move. Needs to drop into her shoulder but I’m sure this will come.
