Blackpool & District Canine Society

Breed: Irish Setter

BLACKPOOL & DISTRICT CANINE SOCIETY LTD

23 June 2018

Irish Setters

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of Blackpool & District Canine Society for inviting me to judge at their Show. It was a great honour for me as this was my first judging appointment at this level. Last, but not least I would like to thank the Exhibitors who entered their dogs under me and supported me for my first appointment and who also accepted my decisions in a sporting manner…. thank you.

The weather held out for us on the day although a bit breezy and it was lovely to see our breed outside with the sun on their backs. It is lovely judging them outside, so I was pleased this was able to be achieved.

I am happy to say that overall I found our lovely breed in tip top condition. The only thing I would say is I found a few round eyes and light in colour, for me it spoils the expression of an Irish. The only other issue for me is movement. Some lovely dogs looked smashing when stood in profile but didn’t deliver on the move, some loose in front and others moving too close behind or their hocks were not straight when going away. We need to be mindful of this and not be prepared to accept poor movement.

Dogs

PD – 3 (0)

1. Tupper & Rosie – Staratlanta Shankly’s Fire

Mature dog for his age but not altogether at the moment. Decent angulation fore and aft, good depth to chest, good stifle and tailset, needs to tighten up on his rear, moved ok but not very co-operative with his handler.

2. Sketchley – Kerrimere Harrison

Preferred the head on this boy, lovely eye, stands square, good rib and depth to chest, shorter in couplings than winner, decent front and rear angulations, moved ok, just needs time to come together.

3. Foster – Goldnavarm Endurance at Shanoah

Junior – 6 (0)

1. Hart’s – Gwendariff In The Limelight with Gilliegrae

Lovely boy, not a big one but still balanced. Nice head and expression, strong neck into great front properties which led through to a deep chest and straight front, strong over the loin. Moved out with drive off lovely short rear pasterns and held his topline. Best Junior in Breed and Gundog Junior Group 4.

2. Russell – Lynwood Hocus Pocus at Settesoli

Another lovely boy with a melting expression, good front assembly and depth to chest, straight front, good substance, nice turn to stifle, moved steady.

3. Riddell – Thendara Hey Jude

Yearling – 8 (1)

1. Gisby – Suteresett King of Hearts JW

Quality youngster turned out in excellent order with lovely dark coat. Melting expression with lovely dark eye, strong neck into excellent front properties, pronounced sternum, straight front, smashing rib, strong over loin, tailset spot on, good turn to stifle, moved out with drive and was true coming and going, held his topline on the move. Good muscle tone.

2. Muir & O’Connor – Gwendariff I’m Comin Out JW

Another quality youngster who is very mature for his age, lovely head and eye, good angulation throughout, deep chested which was also well ribbed back, moved steady but does need to tighten up on his rear.

2. Russell – Strathmead Huckleberry of Settesoli

Lovely head and eye on this boy, lovely dark coat, balanced dog who is easy on the eye, good front and rear, good rib, moved well once he settled into his stride, turned out well.

3. Sharman & Jennings-Sharman – Kerrimere Indiscreet

Mid-Limit – 8 (0)

1. Stockton – Riverbrue Alchemist Amidst Kespas JW

On initial look I didn’t think this would be my winner but what a lovely balanced dog he is, can’t believe he has only just gone 2 as he is very mature for his age. Excellent front properties with the correct lay and return of upper arm, strong over his lovely sloping topline, deep chest, well ribbed back, good turn to his stifle, moved with drive and precision, tuned out well. I’m sure his third CC won’t be far off – RDCC

2. Lucas – Bardonhill Eternal Flame Among Amberlight JW

Just my type of head on this boy, have judged him previously and still find him a joy to go over, beautiful head and eye, lovely depth throughout, good angulation fore and aft and moved well off tight feet. Turned out in excellent order, just felt my winner had the edge with movement today.

3. Condron & Needs – Covarney Macaroon

Limit – 8 (0) – super class of dogs

1. Rowbottom – Lanstara Spring Moon

A dog I have judged before and done well. He then went through that awkward stage but today he looked the best I have ever seen him. Lovely head and eye, with low set ears, strong neck into straight front, excellent front with the correct lay and return of upper arm which enabled him to reach out on the move. Great depth to chest, strong over the loin and good turn to stifle. Strong over the loin and moved with extension and drive off short rear pasterns and tight neat feet. Such an unexaggerated, honest dog who was turned out in excellent order. I could not deny him the DCC today and BOB and was delighted to see him shortlisted in a strong Group. I hope the third isn’t too far off.

2. Longbottom & Stewart-Ritchie – Gwendariff Unknown Soldier JW

Beautiful dog with a melting head and expression, good length to neck leading into good front properties, strong sloping topline which he held on the move, good depth to chest, great turn to stifle, moved steady. Another in great condition.

1. Gisby & Pike – Sh Ch Suteresett Milky Way With Scarletti JW

I just love this boy, his head for me is a joy, he is so balanced and has great angulation front and rear, straight front and good depth to chest, strong over loin, tailset spot on, lovely short rear pasterns which he used to advantage, turned out in lovely condition. Considered for the RDCC but felt he just lost his spark in the challenge.
