THE WHIPPET CLUB OF WALES CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 01-12-18

JUDGE - JAN WOOD

Thank you to the Whippet Club of Wales for inviting me to judge dogs at their championship show, to my stewards Stan and Bethan for their cheerful assistance through out the day and last but by no means least the exhibitors for entering.  I do not believe in fault judging but in judging the whole dog, I was looking for quality whippity whippets that possessed both breed type and correct breed movement.

It is some six years since I last judged male whippets in the UK and it was interesting to realise the different perception that you get of a dog from ringside to when you are actually standing in the ring giving said dog your undivided attention. I am sorry to say that from memory movement on the whole was better six years ago than now, whilst there were some lovely quality exhibits entered here that looked really promising when stacked many disappointed when asked to move. Infill was lacking in quite a few exhibits and I was surprised to find that the majority of dog's tails reached the hock but no further, not something that I would penalise for but a trait that must be creeping in which I would rather not see. On the whole I think that front assembly was better than when I last judged and sweep of stifle has become less exaggerated in those six years. The majority of hounds were presented in super condition.
