Scottish Kennel Club

Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I would like to thank firstly SKC for inviting me to judge their show this year, I was very well looked after by all the committee and I would like to thank my Stewards who did a great job.

I was pleased with my entry of 79 making 82 bearing in mind that the following day the Scottish SBTC were only having an Open show as they were on rotation this year.

Thanks to all the exhibitors who supported me and to the spectators who came along to watch. Today it was just my opinion and placings could easily have been different on another day.

All CC judges now must complete a health survey after they judge, and, in my report, I did point out that there were some dentition problems not the bite so much but as misplaced lower teeth. I saw no breathing problems so over all I was very happy with how the breed is going.

Today I made up a bitch subject to KC approval and started a dog on his way by awarding him his first. All my principle winners meet the standard in my view. I did see dogs who were out at elbow, rear movement could have been better on some but one of bug bears is to see a youngster stripped back, for me a Stafford should have some coverage as a puppy but still be fit.

DCC AUS CH MOSSTROOPER KENTUCKY MOON (MRS E A STANWAY) his first and hopefully not his last….

1ST STORMFIRE LEBRON JAMES (MR B CALONGE) promising red dog with white chest, well-shaped head, with neat ears, dark round eye giving a pleasing expression, good strength of muzzle and strength of underjaw, clean scissor bite, good front and well laid-back shoulders, moved well front rear and in profile, good width of front and depth of chest, for me he was a little too stripped as I do like to see a puppy with some coverage.

2ND TARAIEL REAPER AT TERACOTA (MESSRS L & A RHODES & PRITCHARD) Another promising black brindle dog now didn’t have the strength of head as 1st place but this should come as he matures, but had good width of muzzle, clean scissor bite. Dark round eye giving a pleasing expression, narrower in front than first but still only a baby, good depth of chest, level topline, well defined hind quarters and tail set good, moved well in all directions, preferred him over his litter brother who was in 3rd place.

1ST TAGSTANE TOMAHAWK (MRS T & MR G OWEN) black brindle dog with a beautiful head of balanced proportions skull to muzzle ratio, good depth of stop, clean scissor bite strong underjaw no excess flesh. Straight front, well rounded ribs with good depth of brisket, well defined shoulders, well-muscled rear end moved well in all profiles shown in a fit condition. 2ND BALLINDONA CRAZY HORSE (MISS F WALLACE) black brindle dog of top size but balanced. Stronger all over than my 1st place but has the same qualities, superb head shape, width of skull, depth of stop and length and strength of muzzle, clean scissor bite, excellent width of front showing the depth of chest this boy has, well sprung rib, level topline and well-muscled rear end. On another day he would have been placed first. This dog has a great future ahead of him and like my first place will watch his progression with interest.

1ST ANTRELLEDA SQUADRON LEADER (MISS A M & MR T MURRAY & FAWKES) Caught my eye as soon as he came into the ring. Stunning brindle and you don’t see many of this colour in the ring which is a shame. Has an outstanding well balance head to muzzle ratio, beautiful round dark eye giving a keen and alert expression, well placed eyes set well on. Clean scissor bite with strong underjaw. Straight front with well laid-back shoulders, short coupled with good spring of rib. Level topline on the move and good rear action well defined hindquarters. Tail carried well, moved freely and with drive. Nothing is exaggerated with this dog. Deserved the RCC today and I would hope that this will be the start of good things for this dog.

2ND NORTHSALTIRE NICE ONE SAM (MR M & MRS M RITCHIE) black brindle with well-shaped head, and expression, dark round eye, neat ears, strong underjaw and clean scissor bite. Has a lot of the qualities of my first place, good width of front and depth of chest, moved well in all profiles just carried a little bit extra weight for me today.

Neat rose prick ears. Clean scissor bite a litter narrower in front than my 1st place but still had the depth of chest and spring of rib. Moved well in all profiles. On another day these two placings could be reversed.

1ST AUS CH MOSSTROOPER KENTUCKY MOON (MRS E A STANWAY) This dog caught my eye as soon as he walked into the ring and what I look for in a Stafford and fits the standard in my view. Red/white pied with an outstanding well-balanced head to muzzle ratio, with neat ears, deep dark round eyes with a beautiful expression. Good width of muzzle and underjaw, clean lips with scissor bite and no excess flesh. Having a straight front with well laid shoulders, short coupled, well sprung rib and with level top line on the move, well defined hind quarters, good rear action and tail set good. Alert and on his toes, this dog owned the ring. He reminded me of Ch Waystaff Strikes Back so much who I awarded the CC to back in 2009 and pleased to award him his first CC and I would hope that he will go all the way to his crown.

2ND CH ROCHLAWIE BEHOLD THE HOUR JW (MR W & MRS C MCCLELLAND) black brindle dog with a super head shape, width of skull depth of stop leading to a strong powerful jaw with a clean scissor bite. Super front and lay back of shoulders, had level topline on the move and well-muscled rear end. Moved well in all profiles and a credit to his owner

Minor Puppy – Bitch

1ST SHARMARA AMAZING GRACE (MESSRS C & K DAVIS) pretty mahogany brindle with a good straight front and depth of rib, neat feat, She is short coupled and has a level topline with well-defined hindquarters, she moved well in all profiles, her skull could do with a bit more width for me to balance her length of muzzle, however as she matures that should come, her ears are carried a little high but she has dark eyes which give a beautiful expression, strong underjaw which encases a clean scissor bite.

1ST TILLCARR BAPTISM OF FIRE (MRS K MR M JOHNSON) This little girl stole the show for me reminded me a lot of one of this exhibitor’s previous bitches Ch Tillcarr Ring of Fire who I award the CC to at my very first Champ show back in 2007. Shown in excellent condition, she is the whole package for me and I can see her gaining her title, Strong yet feminine head, well placed neat ears, dark round eye with lovely expression, good width of muzzle and strength and width of underjaw, clean scissor bite. Good depth of chest even at this age, straight front, short coupled level topline on the move and well-defined hindquarters. Tail set and carriage excellent. For me she out shone her litter brother today and I was pleased to award her Best Puppy in Breed. I will watch her progress with interest.

2ND LONEMOOR INION DE FOR ZAAGABULL (MISS G L HOGGARD) another pretty puppy who has a lot of potential for the future, a lot of the same qualities of my first place but preferred the overall picture of my 1st place, however for this little girl she has a cracking head with good width of skull, neat ears and depth of stop, muzzle of good width and strength of underjaw, clean scissor bite. Front is wider than my first place but is straight and shows a good depth of rib, looking from above the bitch she has a good spring of rib, well laid-back shoulders and level topline, her rear assemble is well defined, she carried her tail well. The handler showed her off well, but she needs to over come her nerves as I am sure she would have moved with more purpose but still for me has all the qualities of gaining higher honours as she moves through the classes.

1ST KARGONSTAFFS KOKORO (MR P & MISS A MOFFAT & MCVEY) this was a strong class, but this little girl stood out for me as soon as she came into the ring. She has a super head, width of skull with deep stop leading to excellent width of muzzle and strength of underjaw with clean scissor bite. Her dark round eyes give a soft but keen expression, neat rose pricked ears. She was a little up on the leg but balanced and her front was straight with no over load on the shoulders, level topline and tuck up. Her rear end was well defined, she moved well in all profiles and was shown in fit condition, she was a strong contender for higher honours but came up against a strong line up but should continue to do well as she gets into the higher classes.

2ND TAGSTANE BOBBY MCGEE (MRS T & MR G OWEN) another top-quality bitch with many of the same qualities of my first place but just preferred the overall picture of my first place. This little girl also had a super head shape with equal bull and terrier proportions, dark round eyes, neat ears. Good depth of stop leading to a strong powerful muzzle and jaw. She has a clean scissor bite. She was wider in front than my first place but with no over load in the shoulders, good depth of chest, she was shorter in the body than first place but height to length ratio she was balanced. For me she also ticked all the boxes of what I look for in a bitch. She moved well and with purpose and shown in fit condition.

2ND KINGS & QUEEN'S OVER THE MOON JW (IMP SWE) (MS G & MS E MCDERMOTT & BERNHARDSSON) another top-quality bitch that I have admired from the ringside, black brindle girl with a beautiful strong yet feminine head with neat ears, good depth of stop with dark round eyes. Strong muzzle and underjaw with a clean scissor bite, she has width of chest and correct depth of brisket. She is shorter in body than my first place but height to length ratio she is balanced. She was shown in a fit condition and moved well. On another day she could well have been placed first,

3RD DARLING SUZIES GIRL (MISS Z S STEPHENS)

Post Graduate - Bitch

Entries: 6 Absentees: 0

1ST CRUDHA MAGIC KATIE (IMP SWE) (MR A WILLIAMSON) black brindle bitch who is top sized, but she’s balanced with height to length ratio. Good width of front leading to a good depth of chest. Level topline leading to well defined hind quarters. Neat feet. She has a beautiful head with good width of skull and depth of stop, good width of muzzle and strength in the underjaw. Clean Scissor bite. She has deep dark eyes which provide a stunning expression, neat ears which she carried well. Moved well in all profiles and as with others in the kennel she has a great future ahead of her.

2ND CAYMENSTAFFS LITTLE MINX (MRS C Y & MR J S HOWARD) another promising black brindle bitch, as I have said previously some of the placings could have been reversed and this was no exception, had good width of skull with neat ears, good depth of stop and strong in the muzzle. Her underjaw was a little weaker than my first place, but she has a clean scissor bite. Has a beautiful expression. She was straight in front and had a good depth of brisket, going down her back she was level and has good tail set which she used well on the move. Moving around the ring she moved with drive

3RD DRUMBURN BETTY BOOP (MISS J BELL)

Limit - Bitch

Entries: 10 Absentees: 2

1ST CALLASTAFF MOON RIVER JW (RW & MRS MA SCOTLAND) black brindle bitch who I have admired for a long time. I awarded her mother the BCC at Windsor back in 2013 and for me she is better than her mother. This little girl is worthy of her title but today she had a little bit too much weight losing definition on her rear and she didn’t seem on top form when she moved. In the shadow of her litter brother it’s a shame she hasn’t got her title, but she came up against my OB winner and it was down to what I said above but that aside my critique of her is, she has a strong but feminine head, good depth of stop and width of muzzle, powerful underjaw encasing a clean scissor bite. Dark round eye which makes you fall in love with her. Straight front and width showing depth of ribs, well laid-back shoulders leading to a level topline. Her downfall today was her rear there was little definition although her hind quarters were well muscled, and she moved ok. However, for me she did deserve the RBCC and I hope that she gains that 3rd CC which she fully deserves.

2ND RUBERICLA LITTLE ELITA ONE (MRS C & MR E RYAN) another top quality black brindle bitch, has a beautiful head shape with balanced skull and muzzle proportions, slightly weaker in under jaw than my first place but still strong and housing a clean scissor bite, neat ears which she carried well on the move. Dark round eye which provides a beautiful expression. She has a good width of front and depth of chest. Well laid-back shoulders and level topline. Her hind quarters were well defined, and her tail set was low. She moved well in all profiles. She is other bitch that should continue to do well and receive top honours

3RD STORMFIRE CRACK THE CODE AT WAYSTAFF JW (IMP SPN) (MR P T & MRS E A STANWAY)

Open - Bitch

1ST NETTLEWORTH NO NONSENSE JW (MR A & MRS G DUNCAN) What can I say about this little girl that I haven’t already said, I awarded her RBCC at Manchester in 2015 in Junior as she wasn’t quite ready for me that day for higher. I have watched her progress with interest and she has come up against a lot of top quality bitches that have kept her from her crown. Well not today she deserved to have that 3rd CC and BOB. Her owner had got her into super condition and she owned that ring when she moved. She has a super head shape, width of muzzle and depth of stop. Her dark round eye that makes you want to dive right in. She has neat rose prick ears that sit beautifully on her head and finishes off the whole picture of perfection in a Stafford bitches head for me. She was shown in a fit condition but had coverage which I like to see in all bitches, she moved with grace and ease around the ring, she moved well in front, in profile and rear.

2ND TARAIEL LORDE JW, SHCM (MISS S & MISS J HIRST & BIBBY) black brindle bitch with unusual white markings which for me add to her beauty, I have liked her since she was a puppy she has all the attributes of my first place for me today she came up against another top-quality bitch who just stood out that bit more. However, this little girl will like so many of this kennel continue to do well. She has a beautiful strong yet feminine head and darkest of eyes giving a gorgeous expression. Good depth of stop, width of muzzle providing a strong powerful jaw with a clean scissor bite. She has straight front with feel slightly turned out, her depth of chest and lay back of shoulder provides strong front construction. Level topline and well-defined rear, low set tail and she moved well in all profiles. Definitely one to watch.

3RD STUDSTAFF SUGAR AND SPICE OF HAMASON JW SHCM (MR H & MRS M A, MRS C L & MR S C ROBINSON, ROBINSON-COX & COX)

Veteran - Bitch

Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1ST CH TARAIEL CIARA JW, SHCM (MISS S & MISS J HIRST & BIBBY) black brindle aged 7 and one my favourites from this kennel with the whole package, equal bull and terrier, lovely head and expression, with neat ears and the darkest of eyes, good depth of stop and width of muzzle with clean scissor bite and strong underjaw. Straight front and depth of chest and good lay back of shoulder, level topline on the move with strong powerful rear action carries a little bit of weight now but this doesn’t detract from her presence in the ring.

2ND CANNICHBULL SWEET MYSTERY SHCM (MISS J BELL) black brindle bitch aged 9 years old, longer in the body than my first place, she has a good head shape with good width of skull and depth of stop, she is longer in the foreface than my first place, she has a strong jaw which houses a clean scissor bite, dark round eyes which give a pleasing expression. She does carry her ears higher which does give a totally different overall picture than my first place. She is still in good condition and she moved well in all profiles.

3RD BLAZINSTAFF REFLECTION AT NORTHSALTIRE SHCM (MR M & MRS M RITCHIE)
