Gundog Breeds Association Of Scotland

Breed: Spaniel (English Springer)

Gundog Breeds of Scotland 10th November 2018

English Springer Spaniels.

It was an honour and a privilege to judge the breed at this level for the first time. A numerically good entry made decisions difficult and wins were well earned. Presentation and temperaments were first class.

Dogs

Veteran (5 entries, 2absent)

1st Tracz’s SH CH MEADOWDALE ALABAMA SLAMMER AT ACREGATE

Now 10 years. One I have admired previously. Really like the type and stamp of this one. Classic head with good eye shape and ear placement which gives a lovely expression. Strong neck of good length leads to well laid shoulders. Well boned front with elbows nicely tucked in. Good width over his quarters, hocks are well let down. He took time to settle on the move but moved correctly given time. Best Veteran.

2nd Wallis and Levene’s TORBECK PENRHYN BAY

Another good one, just seven and looking well. Clean in neck and good in front with straight legs and well-rounded feet. Well developed body with well sprung ribs, firm topline and well angulated quarters. Moved well enough.

3rd Hay’s TRALAY BLACKJACK

Post Graduate (1,0)

1st O’Connor’s CALVDALE NIGHT ON THE TOWN WITH KARLEJAY

Almost 2 and coming along nicely. He has a good eye shape and a pleasing head without being overdone. Muscular neck leads to a correct front. Short and firmly coupled and correct in topline. He is balanced through and in good coat and condition. Moved enthusiastically.

Limit (3,1)

1st Rose’s WESTAWAY DREAM ANGUS OF ROSANNOCH

Strongly made but balanced standing. Kind expression with good eye shape and well-set ears. Well off for bone with good straight legs and round feet. Good depth and width to his chest giving plenty of heart room. Strong quarters with plenty of width and short from hock to heel.  He was in good body and coat. Just unsettled on the move today.

2nd Such’s TRIMERE TICKS THE BOX AT MUJASCAL

Finer type than the winner. Pleasing through with good neck and well laid shoulders. Well angulated quarters and again, hocks are well let down. I preferred the topline and tail set of the winner here.

Open (7,2)

1st Bott and Savell’s SH CH ART-WAVES STANDING OVATION FOR ALLENIE

Looking really well today and had to be on top form in this quality class. Presented a balanced and finished picture standing. Well proportioned head with good chiselling. Clean neck of good length leads into correctly sloping shoulders. Lovely width and depth to his body. Firm strong loins and good width to his quarters with development of second thigh. Well presented in good coat and just the right amount of body. Moved freely. Pleased to award him the CC.

2nd Smith’s SH CH MELVERLY TOP GEEZER

Another one from the top drawer. So typical and full of breed type. Lovely to go over. Balanced in head with good eye shape and correct stop and chiselling giving a kind and typical expression. Strong in neck and good shoulder angulation. Firm in topline with good width and depth to his body. He has plenty of rear angulation without being over done in any way. Looked the part standing. Just preferred the movement of the winner today. Nevertheless, a worthy Champion RCC

3rd Holt’s IR SH CH BETHRYN DEVIL MOON completed a quality trio.

Bitches

Veteran (2,0)

Two lovely seven year old l/ws A close decision but on the day I preferred the topline and tail set of the winner.

1st Scorgie’s BERKENBAR CASSANDRA AT ARDTALLA

Looking totally un-veteran like in body and condition. Refined head with good neck and shoulders, correct in front with well laid shoulders. Well angulated quarters. Good width of second thigh. Moved as straight and true as her conformation would imply.

2nd Scott’s CH MELVERLY ISLAY INSPIRED AT LOSSIEDOON

Worthy Champion with classic head. Excels in neck and shoulders. Well boned through and correct in front. Moved with extension when seen in profile.

Minor Puppy (2,0)

Two promising babies who will no doubt be campaigned to advantage and enjoy plenty of successes. Today it came down to finish and maturity to split them.

1st Calvert’s CALVDALE STOWAWAY MAGIC

At 8 months is the more forward of the two. Pleasing head which will only improve as it develops. Super bone and front. Good ribs for her age with both width and depth. Correct in top line. Well angulated quarters. A bit unsteady on the move but can be forgiven at her age! Best Puppy.

2nd Corbett’s TRIMERE TIME TO SHINE

Very much a baby but everything developing nicely. Good head and balanced through with good angulation at both ends. Hocks are well let down and shows a happy disposition. Looked well.

Puppy (1,0)

1st Calvert’s CALVDALE STOWAWAY MAGIC

Junior (2,0)

1st Wilson’s POTRAIL TURNS THE SWAG ON FOR PINEREOCH

Just 16 months but quality is all there. Classic head with enough shape and chiselling. Good eye shape. Ears placed correctly and lie neatly giving a gentle expression. Clean neck of good length flows into well laid shoulders. Good front with enough width yet elbows are well tucked in. Balanced in body with good length of rib and firm short couplings. She is well angulated behind and uses this to effect on the move. So honest and true. RCC in good company. One I will follow.

2nd Macleay’s POTRAIL SHAPE OF YOU

At 12 months is also looking well. Pleasing but a bit stronger in head than my winner and not as forward in body. She will obviously take a bit longer to come together. Good length to her ribs, short from hock to heel and in lovely coat and condition. Moved well in profile.

Yearling (4,1)

1st Holt’s MISS BONES TAMAAM OF BETHRYN

Lovely headed 20 month old with lots to like. Typical expression. Clean strong neck of good length. Sloping shoulders and straight front legs. Well off for ribs with both width and depth. Strong over her quarters with good width and firm in topline. She is in good coat and condition. Moved well going away from me showing drive and extension from the rear.

2nd Dobbin’s DONARDEN DREAM BABY

Almost two and my notes read very similar to the winner. Lovely expression and well put together from her clean neck to her well turned stifles. Close up but not quite as good on the move as the winner today.

3rd Wallis and Levene’s PENDARLOW TIANA

Post Graduate (5,0)

1st Fairgrieve’s PEASBLOSSOM SHIMMER OF ALKARUSS

Well balanced B/W in full coat and presenting a balanced picture when stacked. Attractive head with correct stop and good depth of flews. Strong neck leads to well angulated shoulders. Good width and depth to her body. She has strong well angulated quarters. Moving well in profile today.

2nd Gibson’s CALVDALE RAG NYMPH

Different in type but with plenty to like about her. Well made through, a bit more of her than the winner but still well balanced. Clean in neck with good front, depth of ribs and strong over her quarters.

3rd Graham’s BORDACITY FORGET ME NOT

Limit (10,3)

Lovely class, splitting hairs here.

1st Corbett’s TRIMERE TICATBOO

Well balanced in head with good eye shape and soft expression. Well ribbed body with both width and depth. Short couplings and strong over her loins. Good bend of stifle with hocks well let down.  She was shown in full coat and presented to advantage. Moved well especially going away from me. Pushed for top honours.

2nd Calvert’s CALVDALE HERITAGE OF FOLLY

Another top quality one, correct through with clean strong neck, good shoulder angulation, well off for bone but still obviously feminine. Good width to her quarters and plenty of second thigh. She was in super muscular condition. Just preferred the hind movement of the winner.

3rd Richardson And Terry-Richardson’s CHERISHYM CHARA

Open (6,1)

1st Corbett’s SH CH TRIMERE TICKET MAID

One I given top honours to before, placing her in a group. Good to see her in breed competition and no need to change my mind when competing with her peers. Balanced through with good head showing stop, good length of foreface and chiselling.  Well-shaped eyes of good colour. Clean neck of good length flows into well laid shoulders. Well developed body with good width and depth, firm couplings and strength over her loins. Good turn of stifle. In lovely coat and condition. Looked the part standing and did not disappoint on the move showing really positive hind movement. CC and Best of Breed.

2nd Dobbin’s SH CH DONARDEN MADAME BUTTERFLY

Worthy Champion at 6 years and looking well. Balanced head with good length of muzzle and plenty of work between her eyes. Strong neck leads to a well boned front and well-rounded feet. Balanced in body with good length of ribs. She is firm over her quarters and moved well in both directions. Pushed for top honours.
