Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois)

I should explain before we get in to the detail, that it is, for me, the most pleasurable thing is to judge Belgian Shepard’s of any variety. Having just judged the Groenendaels, a breed that is supposed to be identical to the Malinois, except for the coat and where the quality was outstanding and ran through every exhibit, the Malinois where , I felt lacking in quality . I know it’s disappointing for exhibitors when a judge withholds a top award, but it is equally disappointing for the judge. I did it for the right reasons, in my opinion, with only 4 dogs entered, all with a variety of problems; I decided I could not award the Reserve Dog CC. Because of this I have been completely open in my critiques with what I found when judging and how this was reflected in my placings. Remember also that time creeps up on dogs and sometimes this adds to the reasons why previous top winners are not selected. I know there are better Malinois out there, I’ve seen and judged some very nice ones in the past. My comments on your dogs are meant to be supportive and understanding and I appreciated those of you that took the time to discuss it with me after the judging.

1st: 8885 JELLICOE Miss T I Goldmali On Fire

This dog has an elegant refined head with parallel plains, well chiselled under the eye with dark eye and well split mouth. His front assembly was very short in upper arm and this affected his movement, producing an uncharacteristic hackney action. He has a good deep chest and a rear construction that is similar in proportion to the front.

Well-proportioned head, dark eye, good reach of neck, moderate angulation balanced front and rear, longer in loin than I would have liked and coat preparation could have been better.

Well balanced dog of good construction correct moderate angulation with shoulder and forearm of equal length. This produced the correct movement for the breed of steady endurance. Parallel head plains, dark mask, refined head, with well split mouth. Good length of rib, square in profile, tight feet. Dog CC and BOB

2nd: 8876 BRASON Mrs Y J Ch I' Chaos Flambards Du Domaine De Vauroux (Imp)

Well-proportioned angulation front and rear, but front assemble set on chest a little far forward, ie not enough chest in the front and therefore a little narrow. Correct head plains, and dark eye. This dog was longer in loin than 1st place dog, feet could have been tighter.

This bitch had a good typical head with parallel plains, dark eye and good mask. She had tight well cushioned feet and a good overall appearance. She has a sound temperament, after that she was difficult to assess, as she was very excitable and uncontrolled. Very difficult to separate 1st from 2nd, but chose this one over 2nd on head shape and degree of struggle.

2nd: 8888 RALPH Ms J E Bonvivant Nonchalance

This bitch had a good typical head with parallel plains, dark eye and good mask. She had tight well cushioned feet and a good overall appearance. She has a sound temperament, after that she was difficult to assess, as she was very excitable and uncontrolled.

1st: 8880 BRETT Mrs M Goldmali Over The Rainbow

Young bitch, still developing, but of good type. Very appealing, front assembly good, with shoulders and upper arm of same length with correct moderate angulation. This assembly was placed correctly on to a deep broad chest so all should develop nicely. The rear was similarly in balance with a well set croup, and square in overall appearance. She has plenty of rib length and short in loin, giving that classic BSD shape. The correct construction leading to very economical impressive movement. Well-presented and well handled. 2nd: 8883 HOLMES Mr D & Mrs T J Sparta The One And Only Da Casa Mont'alves

Well-constructed with good angulation for the breed, good type, with stronger head than 1st. Good chest depth and length of rib. Moved well over the ground, but, preferred head and movement of 1.

Of good type, well proportioned, with good tight feet, correct front assembly in balance with rear. Head well-proportioned, parallel planes, darkly pigmented and well split mouth. She has good ear shape and they were used well. Dark mask to muzzle and ears, good spring of rib, short, giving a square appearance. She is well-muscled and moved with drive and endurance. Bitch CC
