Border Collie

Judge: Mr R F (Bob) Rushton

Thank you all for bringing your lovely dogs for me to judge, I found some very good specimens and I just want to make it clear that there were several classes where most of the dogs where of excellent type, and with the correct border collie construction. Type is of paramount importance in any breed, and in the border collie their athletic untiring movement is generated from their construction and is part of the dog’s type. Those specimens with incorrect shoulder and without fore chest could be seen to visibly tire in just a couple of trips around the ring.

Class 542 PD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 1718 RATCLIFFE Miss J Arrodare Hear It For The Boy

Equal length of upper arm and shoulder, balanced angulation front and rear, Good deep chest, with plenty of rib. Level back, tight feet, movement was classic border collie action tireless with endurance. Correct head shape with good under jaw, expressive and alert ears well used, dark eye.

2nd: 1726 SHAHMATOVA Dr M Nashdom Putting On The Style

Preferred the head shape and construction of 1, good ears, well used, short in upper arm, deep chest, long rib, but rolling action when moving, due to lack of reach.

As before

2nd: 1712 LEE Miss B Master Of Illusion

Good type, correct head shape with good under jaw, would have preferred darker eye. Expressive dog with well used ears. Good length of rib and correct overall outline. Movement good, but not the reach of 1, again due to shorter upper arm.

As 2nd last class

2nd: 1717 POLLARD Mr D Janbell The Force Awakens

Front was somewhat loose and tended to stand with feet turned out, and down at pastern, good shoulders, balanced angulation front and rear. Because the structure is basically correct this front could possibly be improved with roadwork. Moved well, dark eye and kind expression, I preferred the head of 1st placed dog.

1st: 1740 WILKINSON Mrs P A Altricia What About That

I really appreciated going over this tri dog. Well-constructed, excellent front, equal length of shoulder and upper arm, set on a well sprung rib that has both depth and length, the rear angulation matches the front exactly and the well set square croup gives the perfect border collie structure for movement that is very free flowing, smooth and effortless, this dog could run miles and miles without tiring. In my opinion he had the best movement on the day. Appealing head, good under jaw, kind expression, and dark eye, expressive and well used ears. Presented in excellent coat. Thank you for bringing this dog, pleased to award him reserve CC. In choosing the CC winner over this dog I just preferred the overall showman ship and ring presence of the CC wining dog, but it was close.

2nd: 1687 ENTWISTLE Mrs K Janbell Here Comes Trouble

Another dog of excellent type, strong head, kind expression, well-constructed with deep chest and level back, moved well around the ring

It’s difficult as an exhibitor to get past a perfectly constructed dog, who looks keen, has the type, and is very fit and well-muscled, and whose handler has him trained to perfection….

A well-made dog oozing type, the front assembly on this dog is excellent, having equal shoulder and upper arm, he has a deep chest and his front legs are set back on the chest to bring them exactly under the dog allowing the freedom of movement needed for endurance in the border collie. With tight feet, strong pasterns, he has level top line, and plenty of rib length. His rear angulation matches the front and he has a square croup with a low set tail. He has a good reach of neck, and correct border collie refined head, he has appealing expression with dark eye. His movement is free and easy demonstrating endurance, with plenty of front extension, looked like he could maintain this all day. Pleased to award him Dog CC and Best of Breed.

1st: 1670 AUSTIN, Ms S P & ZOLAKOVA Ms K Hysteps Made To Measure

There were 4 particularly nice bitches in this class all of good type and all very well constructed, and only separated on finer points. The first placed bitch has an appealing expression, good head shape with dark eye. Her front assembly was correct for the breed with equal length shoulder and upper arm, set on to the chest well back. Plenty of rib and short in firm loin. Level back, well set croup. Moved in a free flowing, continuous way that showed tireless endurance.
