Welsh Kennel Club

Breed: Spaniel (Clumber)

My first time awarding CCs in this lovely breed and I was thrilled with the high entry I received. Surprisingly the depth of quality today came from the dogs rather than the bitches. I was a little concerned at the number of incorrect bites in some of the senior classes and in some cases I felt that a number of dogs were a little weak in hock which was accentuated in the rear movement. Presentation on the whole was excellent and very few dogs had dirty ears and unclean eyes.

1st: PATERSON Mr G Kafernes Connor Mcleod. Good overall balance. Well proportioned head with deep stop and strong muzzle. Ears could be a lot cleaner. Strong neck leading to correct forehand assembly. Well sprung rib - perhaps could be a little longer in rib and shorter in loin. Strong hindquarters. Well boned. Sound driving movement.

1st: RUDBACH Mr S J & Mrs J E Micklemess Making Music At Clumbadane. He came, he saw and ultimately he conquered. I have never seen this dog before but I absolutely loved him. The first thing that caught my eye was his overall balance and outline. His head is broad across the skull with a deep stop and pronounced occiput. Clean dark eyes. Square muzzle with well developed flews. His neck is strong leading to muscular shoulders which are well laid back with correct return of upper arm. Level topline with well sprung ribs which are carried well back. Strong, well muscled hindquarters with correctly bent stifles and good width of second thigh. In excellent coat and condition. His movement was a joy to watch - excellent fore and aft and then with a good side gait when viewed in profile - totally effortless and at one with his handler. I could easily envisage him crossing a field of plough with ease. CC & BOB.

2nd: CHARLESWORTH-IRONSIDE Mrs I M Tavirosh Stonewall. Another quality dog. Good overall balance. Head of correct proportions with clean eyes and well defined stop. I would like a little more length of neck, however he has a well laid shoulder and good length of upper arm. Well sprung ribcage. Hindquarters are well muscled with good bend of stifle. In excellent coat and condition. Moved well both fore and aft. Not quite the drive of the winner but a worthy RCC.

Well muscled hindquarters with good width of second thigh. In excellent coat and condition. Just carried his tail a little high on the move today.

2nd: SHEPPARD Mr & Mrs P A & J A Sugar Loaf Washington Whissgig (Imp). Larger in frame than the winner and not so clean in outline. Broad skull with deep stop. Thick neck leading to well muscled shoulders. Good spring of rib. Strongly made hindquarters. Not quite the coat and condition of the winner.

1st: BODEN Mr & Mrs D K & S L Sh Ch Tweedsmuir Beautiful Dream Among Suelynda JW. One of my great favourites and such a treat to be able to judge her again today. At nearly 10 years old she can still command the ring. Excellent overall balance. Her head is of the correct proportions with a broad skull, large well placed ears and strong, square muzzle. Good length of neck leading to excellent forehand construction. Good length and spring of ribcage. Strong hindquarters with good width of second thigh. Moved so soundly with plenty of rear drive. Although not in her best dress she was a very worthy BV.

2nd: NEWSHAM Mr J & Mrs M Sh Ch Anbrook Skylark At Brazenhill JW Sh.CM. Slightly heavier all through but in no way coarse. Balanced head with broad skull, clean eyes and deep stop. Good length of neck with well muscled shoulders. Ribcage of good length. Well made hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Not quite the drive of the winner moving today but another very worthy titleholder.

1st: BODEN Mr & Mrs D K & S L Suelynda Whirylbird. At just 6 months she was totally unphased by all that was going on around her - so full of confidence. Good overall balance. Head correct for age with well good stop and well developed flews. Neck of correct length leading to well laid shoulder and corresponding length of upper arm. Well ribbed back. Stifles well bent. Correct amount of bone for her age. Moved with confidence on a good driving stride.

2nd: REID Mrs W Arizona White Roll (Imp). More mature that the winner but not as co-ordinated on the move. Broad head with strong, square muzzle. Well laid back shoulder. A little bum high at the moment but this will correct itself as she grows. Excellent bone and feet.

Class PB (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: WALKLING Mr R Maursett Mycate At Kiswahili. Very typical and beautifully balanced all through and very true to type. She has a head of the correct skull to muzzle proportions. Deep stop, well set ears, broad skull and correct bite. Her neck is of a good length leading to well laid shoulders and corresponding length of upper arm. Level topline. Good length and spring of ribcage. Strong, well muscled hindquarters with well bent stifles, good width of second thigh and well let down hocks. In excellent coat and condition. On the move she was accurate both fore and aft and showed a good length of stride when viewed in profile covering the ground effortlessly. In the challenge I thought long and hard as I have always believed that CCs were not for puppies! However, in the final analysis I just preferred her overall balance to that of the open winner and that was the deciding factor. BCC.

2nd: TAYLOR, Mr J M & HILTON Mr M A Delsaux Beneath The Sun. Not quite the outline of the winner. Pleasing head with good stop and strong muzzle. Well laid shoulder. I would prefer a little more length of upper arm. Well sprung ribcage. Hindquarters are well muscled. I would like a little more bend of stifle. Moved steadily.

2nd: WILSON, Mrs S A & WILSON Ms L M Anbrook Fair Maid Of Kent By Winhampton. Well balanced. A little heavier in head than the winner and a fraction longer in the muzzle than I would prefer. Well laid shoulder with good return of upper arm. Good spring of rib. Loin could be fractionally shorter. Well boned. Not quite the drive of the winner on the move.

3rd: SHEPPARD Mr & Mrs P A & J A Whissgig Comedy Of Errors (ai)
