North West Golden Retriever Club

Open Show

Sunday 18th October 2015

I thoroughly enjoyed my days judging for this very friendly club of which i was made very welcome. So thank you to the officers and committee for their kind invitation and to my very helpful stewards who kept the ring running smoothly all day. The show is held in a lovely venue and the atmosphere all day from both committee and exhibitors was very warm and welcoming with all class winners receiving a round of applause. Thank you to the exhibitors for such a lovely entry and for allowing me to go over your beautiful dogs. The quality was excellent with many deciding factors being placed on coat and overall body condition. I was extremely delighted to see here today so many retaining their lovely black pigment but I did find one incorrect bite. One or two exhibits could have done with a little more 'tidier' trimming but I was disappointed to find a handful who's owners had trimmed everything else but had forgotten to trim their dog's feet, and I do like to see tidy and well presented feet. I was delighted with both dog and bitch line ups with anyone of able to take the top spot but, eventually and without hesitation I gave BIS to the young dog Sharp & Martin's Gunhills Barnaby Rudge At Jomaroski with RBIS going to the equally quality bitch Broadhead's Monchique Pachance To Dream JW and BPIS to Tindale's Camestone Edge Of Glory.

Veteran Dog 4 (3abs)

1st Loverock's Putjade Pickpocket JW ShCM

I was very pleased to start my day with this lovely 8yr old dark coated boy who was clearly enjoying his day out with his playful movement. Kind and masculine head of good shape with nice dark eyes and good pigment. Strong neck of good length on well angulated shoulders and standing on straight well boned forelegs placed well under body with tight feet and pasterns. Mature in body with a good spring of rib and short coupled. Lovely turn of stifle with short neat hocks. Super level topline, in lovely coat and condition.

Minor Puppy Dog 1

1st McGuffie's Milltimber Moonriver

Stood alone but a worthy winner. Nicely made short coupled pale coated boy of 8 mths. Lovely dark pigment with kind eye and good ear set giving a gentle expression he just needs a little time to develop more into his head. Lovely length of neck into a good layback of shoulder and return of upper arm with a lovely level topline leading to a correct tailset. Forelegs straight and well boned with lovely catlike feet. Good length and depth of ribcage with a good turn of stifle and straight hocks. Moved ok but just needs to settle a little more but nonetheless a very nice youngster.

Puppy Dog 5 (1abs)

1st Tindale's Camestone Edge Of Glory

What a cracker! Super boy of nearly 12mths and so well put together with good bone and substance, showing correct balance and presented in lovely pale coat and in good muscular condition. Truly masculine head of lovely type with kind dark eyes and super pigment. Good length of neck leading to a lovely level topline and correct tailset. Shoulders well laid with lovely forehand construction with correct length of upper arm. Forelegs well boned on neat feet placed well under body and elbows tucked in. Plenty of forechest and good depth through brisket with ribs well sprung and short coupled body. Lovely bend of stifle which complimented his super front angulation with plenty of width to his second thigh and hocks short, neat and straight when viewed from rear. Once settled, he is very easy on the move showing his lovely forward extension. Just a few tweaks here and there with his handling from his novice handler to get the very best out of him is all that is needed. A very exciting and promising example of the breed. Was extremely delighted to award him BEST PUPPY DOG  and eventually BEST PUPPY IN SHOW. Will watch his future with great interest.

2nd Loach's Glenrioch Prince Charming

Handsome masculine head with lovely kind dark eye and pleasing expression. Clean and reachy neck into good layback of shoulders with well boned forelegs placed well under body on neat feet. Deep chest and short coupled body. Nicely balanced body proportions with good angulation at both front and rear. Has hit the 'teenage' stage in growth and just lacking in coat today but a very nice boy who was unlucky to meet class winner.

3rd McGuffie's Milltimber Moonriver

Junior Dog 6 (2abs, 1w/d)

1st Wedge's Riverscharm Mr McGregor

Although not in his best coat today this mid golden boy cannot be over looked for he has a super level and clean outline. Standing foresquare he shows balance with lovely body proportions. Handsome in head he has a lovely kind dark eye of good shape giving a very pleasing and masculine expression. Strong reachy neck set on well laid back shoulders with good length and return of upper arm. Straight well boned forelegs on neat feet and tight pasterns. Well ribbed and short coupled body with a nice turn of stifle and good second thigh. Super on the move showing his forward reach and placing feet correctly. Not a big boy and still needs plenty of time to fully mature but a lovely example of the breed.

2nd Usher's Alumbeck's Holly Nimbus At Tolush

Pale coated boy of different type to 1, rangier with more scope. Masculine head of good type with dark eye and pigment. Good length of neck and front angulation. Straight forelegs but would prefer a little more bone and tighter feet. Nice bend of stifle and short straight hocks. Moved ok. Just needs more coat and time to fill his frame but a very nice boy.

3rd Fokti's Gremisha Happiness

Yearling Dog 2

1st Wedge's Riverscharm Mr McGregor

2nd Sloan's Palmonas Man Of The World JW

Unlucky to meet 1. Nicely made mid golden boy with good bone and substance. Pleasing head and expression with good shape to eye and again another with lovely dark pigment. Muscular neck of good length set on nicely angulated shoulders. Good depth of chest, straight forelegs, elbows tucked in on tight catlike feet. Short through the loin with a good bend to stifle and in good muscular condition. Moved out well with a good length of stride. Preferred his topline on the move as tends to slouch in rear quarters a little when stood and found his coat today to be a little harsh.

Maiden Dog 4 (1w/d)

1st McGuffie's Milltimber Moonriver

2nd Liggins' Mjaerumhogda's Legacy (imp Nor)

A very nice boy standing and hands on of 11 mths but needs to settle on the move as it was a little erratic today making it difficult to fully assess. Liked him for his overall type but I do feel he needs to grow on a little more. Appealing masculine head with lovely dark eye and pigment. Good depth and width to muzzle with correct bite. Good length of neck on nicely angulated shoulders. Ribs well sprung with a short and compact body with good bone and substance. Good turn of stifle and short straight hocks on neat feet.

3rd Fokti's Gremisha Happiness

Novice Dog 4 (1abs, 1w/d)

1st Liggins' Mjaerumhogda's Legacy (imp Nor)

2nd Fokti's Gremisha Happiness

Happy boy clearing enjoying his day out. Masculine head with kind dark eye, good pigment and correct bite. Good length of neck, shoulders ok. Moved out well. Could do with a little more body and condition on him and just tends to stands a little roached backed but nicely handled by his novice owner.

Graduate Dog 11 (4abs)

1st Sharp & Martin's Gunhills Barnaby Rudge At Jomaroski

What an absolutely super boy, this boy is what the breed standard is all about. Not at all flashy as some but is truly honest and well made. What you see is what you get with him and hands on he's a little gem. Super well balanced head with lovely kind dark eyes, ears well set with correct scissor bite all enhanced with his super dark pigment and showing his masculinity all through without a hint of being harsh. Strong and muscular neck of good length onto well laid back shoulders with nice return of upper arm. Forelegs well-boned and straight on neat feet with good strength to pasterns. Deep through the chest with a good spring of rib leading to short firm loin and couplings. Nicely angulated stifles with short hocks and strong rear pasterns. Looks a picture standing with his lovely level topline and correct tailset but really shows how well he his made when on the move with his super movement. He has power and strength from his rear quarters allowing him to easily push forward and viewed in profile he has super forward extension with a lovely forehand return. All topped of with a quality double mid golden coat with pale feathering and in hard muscular condition. Straight out of the top draw he shows true balance and confirmation throughout. Confidently handled by his novice owner he is definitely one for greater things. He is a credit to both breeder and owner. I will watch his future with interest. Had no hesitation in awarding him BEST DOG  and BEST IN SHOW.

2nd Vernon's Graceleigh Playboy JW

Another lovely boy who was unlucky to meet 1 today. Strong and upstanding boy with lovely bone showing correct body length to height ratio. All male head of good balance with nice amount of stop, dark eyes and a kind masculine expression. Muscular neck on well placed shoulders with good front angulation. Good width and depth to chest and spring of rib with strong loin and short couplings. Rear anguation matching front showing a lovely turn of stifle. Very nice on the move showing a good reach with a lovely level topline. Just lost out to winner on lacking a little maturity.

3rd Shaw's Akenscales Eiri Na Greine JW

Post Graduate Dog 5 (2abs)

1st Goddard's Soneve Stargazer At Glansevern

A lighter framed boy than 2 who won the class on his more positive front movement. Nicely balanced head with good amount of stop, eyes dark of good shape and ears well set. Good length of neck into well angulated shoulders, level topline and tail set. Forelegs straight with ample bone on good feet with elbows tucked in. Chest of good depth with ribs well back and short through couplings. Nicely turned stifle with short straight hocks. Moved out well with a lovely stride. Just needs more coat and time to develop a little more over loin and to drop.

2nd Broadhead's Monchique Status Quo JW

Rich mid golden boy and as always from this kennel presented to perfection. Smaller and a little heavier in build with good bone and substance. Compact in body with a good width to chest and ribs well sprung. Legs well under body on lovely tight feet. Lovely front and rear angulation and in good muscular condition all through. Very pleasing in head with a lovely dark eye.

Another very nice boy who was sadly pipped to the post due to lacking in coat and a little weight across the loin today.  Upstanding 4yr old with a super well balanced masculine head of good type enhanced by lovely dark pigment, pleasing eye with correct ear set and scissor bite. Strong and lengthy neck set on well angulated shoulders leading to a lovely level topline. Well boned forelegs with deep brisket and ribs well sprung. Would just prefer a little softer in head to give a more feminine expression and a little more trimming to her neck.
