I gave my first set of CCs in English Setters nearly 30 years ago and it was a pleasure to judge again today after a 3 year gap. Males were particularly strong in strength and depth of quality. Front angulation is still a problem, with many lacking the correct upper arm angles, which so restricts extension in front movement. but my winners were all well constructed.

It is interesting to see that many of the old kennels have stuck to their style of setter and so they should, it is lovely to recognise them after all these years. My two CC winners came from the same kennel and excelled in breed type and soundness. My two res CC winners were from another kennel and were litter mates, and so like their sire, who I see I gave the Res CC to 3 years ago, again superb examples of breed type and soundness.

I am a great believer in good structure giving good movement and setters need to be able to move and indeed run all day if fit for function, so I made them move enough to ensure fitness and soundness and my top winners excelled in this challenge – it was a pleasure to judge such wonderful examples of the breed.

Dark tri baby with wonderful bone and substance. Kind expression, but head needs to break. Excellent make and shape, with super angulation front and rear. In lovely coat and condition, sound mover who just needs to mature and tighten all over to fulfil his huge potential.

3rd in JD, blue dog of reasonable type, nice head shape but lacks angulation to front and rear which means he does not move as well as the winner. Overall shape good, coat wavy.

1st: 5438 LEATHER Ms A Meldor-sett Laird Of Avalon At Pewterspeare (imp Poland)

Loved this boy, he is so worth persevering with. Fabulous bone, size, shape and construction. Loved his head and expression, good neck, topline and tail carriage. Super ribbing and correct loins. Excellent angulation front and rear which gave him his superb movement. Have confidence in his quality, go to training classes and make the most of him, he is gorgeous.

Another super dog, blue with lovely head and expression. Dark eyes, so well made all through. In excellent coat and condition and sound mover. Very close to winner.

Dark blue male with a gorgeous outline. Super head, eye and expression. Correct angulation and overall construction. In fabulous coat and condition. Has a lovely side gait but has weak pasterns so fails coming towards you which is a shame as he is lovely.

Heavier type, blue dog. Good overall make and shape, would prefer better front angulation. Sluggish on the move.

Really liked this orange boy for his type, shape and style. Lovely head with dark eye and kind expression, super neck, topline and tail carriage. Excellent bone, coat and condition. Fabulous side gait but another that pins in front which cost him in the final line up.

Very nice dog who I liked for his overall size, shape and construction. Typical head, expression and dark eye, excellent topline and tail carriage. Super angulation and excellent coat. Not moving at his best today or he would have won the class.

Class 1813 OD (7 Entries) Abs: 3

2 just stunning males. So little to choose between them. Sorry I made you run so much but they were so close.

1st & CC, a beautiful tri dog who I gave a BIS to 3 ½ years ago, he has matured into a stunning boy. So well made and in full bloom, a pleasure to go over and he moved like a dream. 2nd & Res CC, a simply wonderful orange, more my type and again in full bloom, gorgeous construction and very sound but he didn’t like the floor and so lost out to the sparkle and verve of the winner. A real honour to judge two such super specimens of the breed.

Class 1823 OB (6 Entries) Abs: 2

1st: 5425 DENNIS Mrs J M Sh Ch Mariglen Xanthe JW

Where do I start.... Just adored this orange girl, feminine, balanced, excellent construction and a dream to watch on the move. Gorgeous head and true setter expression, wonderful outline, angulation and in full coat. You could write the breed standard using her as a model. Made my day and so delighted to hear she made the last 6 in the group. Pleased to give her the CC & BOB

2nd: 5437 LAWSON Mrs L A Sh Ch Mariglen Ice Crystal JW Sh.CM

Another excellent setter, blue bitch, so well made all through, unlucky to meet the winner in such good form, super sound mover and in good coat and condition. Just lacking that extra sparkle for top honours today.
