Open Show 21 April 2024

My thanks to my lovely stewards, Sarah and Raf, who kept things moving smoothly all day, and managed to hang on to all the paperwork, prize cards and rosettes in the blustery conditions. Some quality dogs to assess, and my thanks, too, to the Group judges who sent some great dogs through to the BIS ring.

Best in Show was Thorpe & Bircham’s Pointer, Wilchrimane Adagio at Braegorse, Reserve Best in Show Wilton-Clark’s Whippet Shalfleet Oliver Twist, who was also Best Puppy in Show, Reserve Best Puppy Williams, Newton and Slack’s Portuguese Water Dog Rarjo Macduff Making Waves with Medulcie, and Best Veteran in Show Crawford’s Tibetan Terrier Silghari O’de Chien at Nytechorus.

The pointer was a strong, well constructed and athletic male, with a noble head of beautiful proportions, correctly angulated at both fore-and hind-quarters, who moved with reach and drive to take the top spot. The whippet, at just 8 months, came into the ring as if he owned it, sensitively handled to show off his outstanding qualities. The very best of fronts was complemented by well angulated quarters, resulting in the typical daisy-cutting action, true from all directions. Reserve to the whippet was the 9-month old Portuguese water dog, square in outline, with excellent muscle, moved with a light, lively action, and the Veteran TT, beautifully proportioned from his well-laid shoulder to muscled quarters, was shown in first class condition. Congratulations to all the winners.

In general, the dogs shown under me were well presented, and most coped well with the blustery conditions and flapping ring-tapes but there were too many with dirty teeth. I appreciate that veterans may have some issues with missing or misplaced teeth, but even the oldies should have clean mouths. And may I ask exhibitors who bait with treats not to shove food into their dogs’ mouths while they are being assessed. It can result in dogs misunderstanding the process and thinking a judge is trying to take food off them and may result in unwanted responses.

Airedale Terriers

Puppy (2, 1 abs)

1. Eastall’s Shadlisa on a High Together at Daedal

Nicely proportioned young male, with short level back and strength through the loin. Deep chest with ribs carried well back. He has a masculine head, well-filled below the eye and a powerful jaw with perfect bite. His ears are a little wayward at the moment, and he needs to be moved at the right speed to allow him to propel himself forward freely. Good dense jacket of good texture and colour. BPIB, RBOB and PG1

Special Yearling (2, 0)

1. Knights, Steinke & Stokes’ Temtiz Buzz Lightyear at Lelaps

Nice young male who was a little unsettled by the blustery conditions, but once he settled to the job, moved well. I preferred his proportions to the second placed, although he could have been a little deeper throughout the body to complete the picture, and he held his topline standing and on the move. Long flat skull and correctly proportioned and balanced foreface, well laid shoulders and good length of quarters with hocks well let down, resulting in drive on the move.

2. Steinke’s Temtiz Miss Prim and Proper

Litter sister to winner, similar in type but deeper through the body. Not quite the balance of head proportions as the dog, and tailset not so good. Moving rather close behind.

1. Eastall’s Daedal Frozen in Time

Lovely head with strength and balance between skull and foreface, well filled below the eye, and excellent mouth. Lovely ear carriage. Well laid back, long shoulder, straight forelegs with good bone down to the toes. Short back with level topline, well muscled across loin and close coupled, with nice depth through the body. Good length of hindquarters, with hocks well let down. The gusty wind rather put her off her stride on the move. BOB, G4.

Border Terrier

Puppy (2, 0)

1. Alpe’s Pipruda Perfect Storm

Smaller girl, well proportioned and with deep, narrow body of good length, leading into racy quarters. Pretty otter head with keen expression, neat ears well placed and carried. Good tailset, and tail carried well. Harsh jacket and thick skin completed the picture. BPIB and PG2

2. Clewlow’s Borasco Lady Vengeance

Not happy with the weather today, and not making the most of her obvious qualities. Heavier in build than the winner, but with the same typical head, and good mouth. Lower tailset than the winner, and she was tending to hunch up against the wind, spoiling her outline. Dense coat of correct texture, and another with the typical thick pelt.

Special Yearling (2, 0)

1. Tuffin’s Flegato Fidelio at Oatberry

Lovely head with nice width across the skull and strength of muzzle. I’d prefer a little more length of ribbing, but he was strong through the loin, and moved well. RBOB

2. Borasco Lady Vengeance

Limit (5,1)

1. Smith’s Gyppeswick’s Circe

Typical head properties, with nice breadth across the skull, strong muzzle with big white teeth. Held a good topline standing and on the move, despite the buffeting of the wind. Deep, narrow body of good length, strong through the loin and racy quarters. Coat a little thin at the moment, but the texture was harsh.

2. Tuffin’s Southash Lavender Blue at Oatberry

Not much to choose between first two, this one was in better coat, and the same correct body proportions. Muzzle a little longer, but lovely dark eye with keen expression.

3. South’s Borderella High Tide

Open (7, 1)

1. Vaughan’s Holteal Halfpenny Worth

Very typical Border, from her otter head with short strong muzzle, large teeth and keen expression, through a well-ribbed body of good length, strength through the loin and leading into racy quarters. Good tail, well set and carried well despite the buffeting wind. Sound mover. BOB and G1

2. Holmes’ Ir Ch Barnby Caramel Wafer at Bimandi

This boy’s attitude and attributes belie his 10 years. Shown in cracking condition, well muscled throughout, with deep body of good length, ribs of good depth and carried well back. Lovely thick skin and harsh, dense coat. Masculine head of excellent proportions and well carried ears.

3. Wand’s Stowthorney Sands of Time

Cairn Terrier

Puppy (1, 0)

1. Saich’s Lindcoly Singing Angela

What a delight this young lady was, wonderful disposition, totally unfazed by the windy conditions, and determined to clear the ring of dandelions, until she settled to the job in hand. Small head with broad skull and clearly defined stop, strong jaw and good mouth, neat pointed ears correctly placed. Good depth of rib and nice length of loin, still needs to strengthen a little throughout, but she has time on her side. Strong quarters and well let down hocks, with good driving action on the move. Profuse coat with decent undercoat, and well furnished tail which she carried well. BPIB and PG4

Limit (1, 0)

1. Saich’s Lindcoly Here Comes Oh Shi

Beautifully balanced, from her head, with breadth across the skull and well defined stop, strong jaw and good furnishing, decent length of neck leading into good shoulders with elbows held close to the body, through a level deep body to muscular quarters. Good harsh jacket with thick undercoat, she moved well when she settled. RBOB

Open (1, 0)

1. Saich’s Lindcoly Ocean Dream

Many of the same comments as the Limit winner apply here. Another well balanced girl, well sprung ribs of good depth, strength across the loin. Good slope to shoulders, again with elbows held close to body, and strong quarters with good bend of stifle. Correct double coat. Moved well to take BOB, G3

Jack Russell Terrier

Puppy (1, 0)

1. Evans’ Jackpack Picture Perfect

Flat skull and well defined stop with strength of muzzle. Cheeks developed well, good dark eye with keen expression. Correctly placed ears, carried well. Well angulated front assembly, with elbows set under the body, and straight forelegs with good bone down to the feet. She’s a fraction longer in body than I would prefer for perfection, but lots to like. BPIB, RBOB and PG3

Special Yearling (1, 0)

1. Reeve’s Roxway French Connection

Bigger built young dog, not quite the angulation in front, and elbows not carried as close to the body as I would like, and less bend to stifle. Moved a little out at elbow coming towards me, but driving from behind.

Limit (2, 0)

1. Evans’ Kulawand Wicked Whisper at Jackpack

Lovely outline standing and keeping a level topline on the move with just a sight arch over strong loin. Good angulation in front, showing enough forechest, and balancing construction of hindquarters, muscular and with strength. Well set and carried tail. Free movement from all directions. BOB and G2

2. Porter-Manning & Porter’s Roxway Sunflower among Wallaroo

Not quite the angulation of the winner, and consequently not achieving the reach and extension on the move, also moving a little wide behind. Nice depth to body and well sprung ribs. Tailset a fraction lower than I would like.

Open (1, 1)

Parson Russell Terrier

Puppy (0)

Special Yearling (1, 0)

1. Stock’s Vixenview Montero of Shemist

Difficult to assess this one, as she refused to settle on the move, and lacked the true free striding action expected from a working terrier. Nice wedge-shaped head with correct skull to foreface ratio. Decent strength to jaw with good bite. Sloping shoulder with good return of upper arm, legs carried well under body. Ribs carried well back and slight arch over loin. Hindquarters well made, so difficult to see how she could move so badly behind. In the absence of other competition, RBOB

Limit (2, 2)

Open (2, 1)

1. Newstead’s Tophead Saffron

Well proportioned girl with nice conformation front and hind, long sloping shoulder and good return of upper arm, allowing her elbows to set under the body, but free of the ribcage to allow for a free stride, covering the ground. Lovely head with flat skull and little stop. Well placed ears. BOB

AVNSC Terrier

Puppy (3, 2)

1. Smith’s Ozbreeze Wildest Dreams (Bedlington T)

Young bitch of nice make and shape, flat ribs but still needs to drop a little in brisket. Correct arch over loin and overall body proportions good. She has a nice head, narrow with no stop, and ears low set, if a bit on the large side. She was let down today by her hind movement, very loose on the hocks and lacking the lift and drive which gives this breed its distinctive light, mincing gait.

Special Yearling (4, 3)

1. De’Cova’s Blackdale Dominator at Lestarwillow (Wire Fox T)

Up to size. Masculine with no sign of coarseness. Flat skull, tapering foreface of good length and well filled below the eye, with flat cheeks. Alert and intelligent expression. Short level back with muscular, strong loin, good depth to brisket, and short coupled. Long thighs and well let down hocks. Moved with drive. BPNSC Terrier

Limit (4, 1)

1. Stone & Lawrence’s Go Steady Eddie (WHWT)

Compact, strongly made male, lovely typical head with slightly domed skull and tapering foreface from good stop to muzzle. Dark eye with intelligent, alert expression. Head set at the correct angle on a muscular neck of good length, leading into sloping shoulder. Short strong forelegs. Level topline, strong loin of good width, with muscular hindquarters, resulting in free, driving movement. I understand the exhibitor is a relative novice; I hope someone in the breed will take this lady under their wing, and advise on presentation, as this dog deserves more successes. RBNSC

2. Western’s Westpoint Englebert (Cesky T)

Well made and muscular dog, Good head with slight dome to skull and little stop. Muscled shoulders and well boned forelegs, body showing correct rise over the loin, with slight tuck up of underline. Strong quarters with short second thigh. Moved with drive.

3. Smith’s Ozbreeze Rock Me Baby (Bedlington T)

Open (5, 2)

1. Mullaney’s Ruxleywyre Magic Box

Well proportioned head with flat skull and strong foreface, well set ears folded above skull. Muscular neck of good length leading into well laid back shoulders. Deep chest, short back with level topline, short-coupled with strong arched loin. Good length to thigh, with well let down hocks, allowing flexing to give drive from behind, and moving freely in front. Crisp, wiry coat finished the picture. BAVNSC Terrier

1. Knights & Stokes’ Tokaji Candy Apple Red at Lelaps (Basenji)

Finely boned girl, with lovely head, good wrinkling on forehead, and nice dark eye, small and fine hooded ears contributing to her intelligent expression. Good length of neck, giving the correct head carriage both standing and on the move. Well sprung ribs of good depth, I would prefer a slightly shorter loin. Well muscled quarters. Lovely free, long stride, moved really well. Kept a good topline on the move, but was feeling the effects of the wind, and hunched up standing. BAVNSC Hound

1. Simm’s Stonemartin Anlon at Ezhar (Azawakh)

Not the weather to do any favours for a breed like this, but this boy coped well. Refined and chiselled head with flat skull, slight stop and good length of muzzle. Dark, almond shaped eye, set correctly to give a noble expression. Good reach of muscular neck leading into shoulders with just a slight slope and enough return of upper arm to set the forelegs under the body. High on the leg, with brisket above elbows, and a curved underline to show a good tuck-up. Long lean quarters which he used to give the typical lifting action.

Hound Group

1. Whippet Wilton-Clark’s Shalfleet Oliver Twist - I’ll leave the full critique to the breed judge, suffice it to say, this youngster was the stand-out in this Group, sympathetically handled, and with such presence and lovely to watch on the move.

2. Dachshund (Long-Haired) Cross’ Breezelyn Long Way to Go to Loggeta. Again, he will get a full critique from the breed judge, but he deserved his place here thanks to his superb condition and construction, and excellent movement.

3. Azawakh Stonemartin Anlon at Ezhar

4. Dachshund (Wire- Haired) Mease’s Gino at Harvidean

1. Baldwin’s Aventine Scotts Bluff (Dachshund W/H)

Well muscled at almost 10 years, lovely head with correct arch to skull and muzzle, Well angulated forequarters with short strong forelegs, elbow covering lowest point of brisket. Prominent breastbone with indentations either side. Ribs carried well back, slightly arched loin and full, muscled hindquarters. Moved freely with good ground clearance. Harsh coat with good beard and distinctive eyebrows

Puppy

1. Coverley’s Aventine The Poacher (Dachshund W/H)

Many of the same attributes apply as to the Veteran, another well proportioned dog with good forechest, nice depth throughout, and moved well.

Varieties

AV Minor Puppy (12, 6)

1. Keely & Ekstrand’s Oakbeach Crash Boom Bang into Alhambian (Cocker Spaniel)

Lovely youngster, chiselled skull with square muzzle, low set ears with leathers reaching to nose tip, muscular neck leading into sloping shoulder. Well boned down to feet. Compact body with deep brisket and strong broad loin. Moved with drive

2. Bowden’s Gillbryan Midnight in Paris (Golden Retriever)

A close decision between first two, another with beautiful head and expression, good length of neck into well laid shoulder. Correct return of upper arm to place forelegs well under body. Deep ribs and short coupled, holding a level topline standing and on the move.

3. Adam-Slomkowski’s Frank Dreamed a Dream at Skylax (Lhasa Apso)

AV Puppy (8, 6)

1. Middleton-Collins’ Berrymeade a Fool in Love of Jasperleigh (Golden Retriever)

Effortless, economical movement. Well built throughout, still needs to strengthen across the chest, but keeping a lovely topline

1. Wallington’s Ferndel Renzo at Rovinjdal (Welsh Springer)

Compact, muscular body, but not quite the precision of the winner on the move, and tending to lose shape.

AV Special Beginners (19, 11)

1. Berrymead A Fool in Love of Jasperleigh (Golden Retriever)

2. Wright’s La Scales Berlin with Chazbaz (Cocker Spaniel)

Nice head, with well set ears, good neck leading into well laid shoulder and correct depth of body. Moved well but tended to lose topline on the move.

3. Pullen’s Meadowbears Master of Music (OES)

AV Brace (8, 5)

1. MacBain & Brewer’s Field Spaniels

Well matched pair for both type and size, won this class on their movement, perfectly in sync going round the ring

2. Cross’ Dachshunds (Long Haired)

Another pair of quality dogs, just not quite so together on the move.

3. Pullen’s OES
